The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
